What does CELTA mean?

“CELTA” stands for Certificate for English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages.

Who is CELTA for?

All sorts of people who are interested in English language teaching. Many are native speakers of English looking to embark on a teaching career because they know that CELTA is the best qualification when looking for a teaching position in a private language school.
Many non-native teachers of English take CELTA because they are interested in their own professional development and want new ideas for classroom methodology. You should know that CELTA can also be used to gain points in graduatorie – the recent Bando for English Teachers at the University of Cagliari awarded 5 points to CELTA holders.

What is so good about the CELTA course?

The CELTA course is world-famous because of its rigour and the high quality, face-to face input offered on daily basis. There is a strong emphasis on practical classroom techniques. What is so valuable about the CELTA qualification?

The qualification you will obtain is internationally recognized and widely trusted by English language schools, ministries of education, government bodies such as The British Council and major professional organizations such as IATEFL.
The CELTA is also accredited by Ofqual, the UK exams regulator and is recognized as part of the UK Qualifications and Curriculum Framework for teachers.

What does a typical day on the course look like?

The CELTA course is full-time and very intensive. Most days involve two input sessions by the course tutors on specific parts of the CELTA syllabus. You will also have to plan lessons and teach them to students while being observed by the tutors. Feedback from the tutors on your performance is an important part of the course. You will get the chance to observe experienced teachers in the classroom and will have homework assignments or planning to complete in the evenings.

Is there a final exam?

No, the assessment is based on your performance during the course. The tutors take into account factors such as the quality of your 4 written assignments, the coherence of your lesson plans and your teaching skills observed during the teaching practice sessions. You submit all of you work in a portfolio called the “CELTA 5” which is assessed by the two course tutors and externally moderated by an assessor from the University of Cambridge.

How can I enrol for the course?

In order to be eligible for the course, you must complete the application form and the pre-interview task in your own handwriting. You will be then contacted by the Main Course Tutor for an Skype interview. You should demonstrate an excellent command of English in both written tasks and the interview.
